Agate is a silicon dioxide, a rock formation containing quartz and chalcedony as its primary properties. Agates are mostly formed within volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Agate often forms on or within pre-existing rocks some of which have been dated to around 3000 million years ago. Agates have been found in sedimentary rocks, normally in limestone and dolomite.
Within the world of Agate there are various types. Lace Agate has lace like patterns swirling around and can be red and white, blue and yellow, and is often found in Mexico. Moss Agate has a mossy green colour and is a mixture of chalcedony and oxidised iron. Turritella Agate forms out of the shells of fossilized freshwater gastropods. Coral and petrified wood can also form agate. Coldwater Agate forms within limestone and dolomite of marine origin these are often grey and white colours. Greek Agate is white and tan in colour and hails from Sicily, once an ancient Greek colony dating back to 400 BC. The ancient Greeks used agate to make seal rings, beads and jewellery. Brazilian Agate is found in large geodes in brownish colours with white and grey
Agate was named three or four centuries before Christ having been discovered in Sicily on the shore of the Drillo river by Theophrastus, a philosopher and naturalist. Agate was very popular in ancient civilisations and has been recovered all over the world in ancient sites, especially at the Knossos site, a good example of the Minoan culture, in Crete dating back to the Bronze Age.
Agate has been discovered in a variety of colours within the United States around the great lakes, Minnesota and Maryland and in Botswana and Brazil and Mexico. Idar-Oberstein in Germany is one pf the modern worlds largest agate processing centres, and handled industrial quantities of agate and producing coloured beads, sculptures and stained glass windows, cups, vases, signet ring seals, and all sorts of items of jewellery.
At Aquarian Pearls our agate and pearl elastic bracelets are composed of greens and browns and fawn colours.
Agate is good for rebalancing and harmonising the mind, body and spirit. It cleanses and stabilises the aura, eliminating and transforming negativity. Agate enhances mental agility, improving concentration, perception and analytical abilities.
